Leicester Bike Share Santander Cycles Leicester E-Bike Santander Cycles Leicester

LEICESTER’S new e-bike share scheme, Santander Cycles Leicester, is extending its offer of free midweek rides into September.

Free rides on Leicester’s new fleet of e-bikes, courtesy of BID Leicester, are available to the first 200 people to email support@rideonleicester.com. They will then get £5 of credit added to their account, to be used on a Wednesday between 25 August and 29 September inclusive.

You can nominate which Wednesday you would like your credit for by quoting the appropriate code:

  • August: BIDRRL25 for 25 August
  • September: BIDRRL01 for 1 September, BIDRRL08 for 8 September, BIDRRL15 for 15 September, BIDRRL22 for 22 September and BIDRRL29 for 29 September. The offer is available to both existing users of the scheme and new users, who can register at rideonleicester.com.

The bikes are a great way of getting around the city to check out Rocket Round Leicester, the city’s popular sculpture art trail, hosted by local charity LOROS and on display throughout the city until 26 September. How many of the rockets can you see as you ride round the city? You can pick up a trail map from the Rocket Round Leicester hub, a pop-up shop in the Highcross shopping centre.

To celebrate Rocket Round Leicester, there will also be free guided rides taking place. On Sunday 29 August, as part of the regular monthly Open Streets festival celebrating Leicester’s people-friendly streets, there will be a Rocket Round Leicester guided ride starting at 1.30pm from the Town Hall bike park. You can get free credit added to your Santander Cycles Leicester account for use on the 29 August too, so people will be able to complete the ride on a hired e-bike, for free! Simply email support@rideonleicester.com and quote the code BIDRRL29.

Docking stations for the bikes are already in place in key locations across the city centre and once fully operational, Santander Cycles Leicester will feature a fleet of more than 500 cycles and 50 docking stations, making it the largest docked e-bike share scheme in the UK.

The scheme began running for testers in January 2021, before opening up to wider use in April 2021, to coincide with the easing of lockdown restrictions.

The £600,000 project is being funded by a partnership made up of Leicester City Council – following the council’s successful bid to the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities fund – with sponsorship from Santander UK and additional investment from the operator, Ride On, and their delivery partner Enzen Global.

Leicester City Council has a package of nearly £80million, including funding from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund, to spend on a range of major projects. As well as the bike share scheme, these include developing better walking and cycling links and the successful upgrade to electric park and ride buses.
