School Streets are designed to make the areas outside schools safer, cleaner and more pleasant at the busiest times of the day.
During school drop-off and pick-up, temporary restrictions limit motorised traffic outside participating schools, creating a safer environment for pupils, families and local residents.
By encouraging more families to choose active travel and walk, wheel, cycle or scoot to school, School Streets help reduce congestion, improve air quality and give children the confidence to travel more independently on their journeys to and from school.

School Streets operate for a short period before and after the school day, typically around 30 to 60 minutes, specifically at drop-off and pick-up times.
During these times, most motor vehicles cannot enter the designated School Street unless they have an exemption. These could be emergency service vehicles, those with Blue Badges or eligible residents (where applicable).
The restrictions are clearly signed, making it easy for drivers to understand when they are in operation. The restriction applies to school traffic and through traffic.
