Is your school in need of an upgrade?

Is your scooter and cycle parking always full? Good news! The Choose How You Move team has now opened applications for School Infrastructure Grants.

We want to give as many children as possible the opportunity to travel to school actively, even if it’s only part of the way. With funding from DfT, we are now able to provide grants of up to £6000 to help your school purchase scooter and cycle parking.

What is the grant?

  • What is the school eligible for?

Leicestershire primary and secondary schools are welcome to apply for a grant to receive the below:

    1. Up to £5000 towards cycle racking and shelters.
    2. Up to £1000 toward scooter pods.

    One application per school.

If you’d like to receive a grant for both scooter pods and cycle parking, you can do so in one application.

  • How does the grant work?
    1. Make an application via the online form, or by emailing the word form (at the bottom of the page) to the Choose How You Move team.

    2. Once the team have assessed applications, you will receive an email accepting or rejecting your application. If your application is accepted, you will be emailed confirming your grant.

    3. Please then supply the Choose How You Move team with a quote from your chosen supplier for the works.

    4. The Choose How You Move team will then process a payment to your school for the price of the quote.

Please note the grant does have an upper limit and anything over this will not be reimbursed.

All grants are approved on a first come first served basis.

  • How do I receive the funds?
    1. Once you have received your email confirming your grant, we will require you to get a formal quote from the supplier of your choice.
    2. You will then need to provide us with a copy of the quote, a bank statement and a completed bank mandate form.
    3. We will then raise a request for payment.

Please note once we have raised the request, it can take up to 30 days for the payment to be made.

  • What do I need to after?

We need schools to provide data at 3, 6 and 12 months after having the infrastructure installed. This will include images, usage rates and any other anecdotal data. We may also ask you to provide information for a case study.

We also ask that your school work with our team to try and achieve ‘Good’ level accreditation on ModeshiftSTARS within three years of receiving the grant.

How does active travel help our children?

Walking, cycling or scooting to school helps children engage better at the start of the school day

Travelling actively is great for children's physical and mental health

More active travel means less cars on the roads outside our schools

Parents, carers and teachers can use the BetterPoints app to get rewards for travelling sustainably

There are great environmental benefits from encouraging active travel such as better air quality and reduced noise pollution

ModeshiftSTARS

As per the terms and conditions, we expect all schools who receive this grant to work towards ‘Good’ level accreditation on ModeshiftSTARS within three years of receiving the money.

Case Studies

Schools may be asked to provide a case study, which would include a testimonial from the school (staff and/or children) and images of the infrastructure in use.

What is ModeshiftSTARS?

What is ModeshiftSTARS?

Modeshift STARS (Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition for Schools) is a free national awards scheme that recognises schools for promoting cycling, walking and other sustainable travel choices.

By joining the programme, your school will receive access to a nationally recognised School Travel Plan and can work towards one of four accreditation levels: Approved, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding.

With over 12,000 schools already taking part, Modeshift STARS provides a simple framework to support active and sustainable travel within your school community.
