Build a legacy of active travel choices for your community
Leicestershire County Council is happy to announce the relaunch of the Legacy Grants. Applications for the second round will open on 20 October 2025.

What are Legacy Grants?
A Legacy Grant is a fund of £5,000 to launch active travel initiatives within a community. Applications will be successful if they can prove the initiative will have long-lasting benefits.
The grant can be used for a range of community needs, such as:
- Buying in e-bikes to loan in the community.
- Running an active travel project in local schools.
- Funding walk leader training to set up social groups in your area.
Two grants will be allocated per district, on a first come, first serve basis. These cover our community areas: Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire, and Oadby and Wigston.
Who can apply for Legacy Grants?
Any community group can apply for funding, as long as a governance structure for the group is in place. Equally, joint applications can also be submitted, which makes this a prime way to collaborate and cross-work to positively impact your area in more ways than one.

If you work for a primary school, you can apply for funding through our Primary School Grants scheme.
Please note: Those who have previously received funding through the Legacy Grants scheme will not be able to reapply.
What have our Legacy Grants achieved so far?
Blaby – Blaby District Council plans to work with members of the community to encourage cycling as a form of travel. More info TBC.
Charnwood – South Charnwood School Sport and Physical Activity Network (SCSSPA) procured a supplier for their bicycle loan scheme in schools. They are currently working on their plans to launch a cycle loan scheme in Charnwood. 
Harborough – Market Harborough Active Travel Revolution are working with local primary schools to produce Travel Plans and identify areas for infrastructure improvements. They plan on working with other organisations such as HDC, CHYM and Active Together to support schools in Market Harborough and encourage active travel by identifying behaviour change initiatives. 
Hinckley and Bosworth – Event held in September. Schools have received puncture repair kits. 
Melton – Organising training events and a Scootability festival. Bikes for secondary school loan scheme are in the process of being purchased.
