Group Walks in November and early December

Welcome to our group walks programme for November and early December 2025.  

Walks are free to attend but places must be booked. For full details of each walk and to book, please visit Eventbrite via the links below.  Alternatively, book by phone during office hours (excludes weekends and bank holidays). Our contact details are at the bottom of the page.

Our Walks this month…

Special Interest Walk: Stoneygate – its people and places
Saturday 1 November at 11am
Starting: outside Stoneygate Baptist Church, London Road. (Bus stop nearby)
Up to 90 minutes with information stops. Steady pace. 1.2 miles.
A walk through the attractive suburb of Stoneygate, discovering some of its former residents and places of heritage interest. Formerly farmland, the area underwent much development from the mid-19th century to become one of Leicester’s most desirable locations. Free to attend but booking is required.

Special Interest Walk: War & Peace: People and Places associated with WWI (New!)
Tuesday 11 November at 2pm

Starting from Orton Square, near Curve theatre.
Finishing at gates of Welford Road Cemetery, University Road. Bus stops nearby.
Up to 90 minutes with information stops. Steady pace. 1.5 miles. Linear (one-way) walk.
A repeat of the walk first offered in September 2025. Join us for a walk visiting buildings and memorials in Leicester associated with WWI (1914–18). This walk includes stories of service men and women from different walks of life who played their part. We will pass buildings with important wartime links and memorials to the fallen. The walk is led by one of our Walk Volunteers with an interest in the subject. Free to attend but booking is required.

Wildlife Walk: Walk on the Wild Side – Victoria Park & Welford Road Cemetery 
Thursday 13 November at 10.30am 
Starting from the memorial Arch of Remembrance on Victoria Park 
Up to 2 hours with information stops. Steady pace. 1.5 miles. 

A Walk on the Wild Side in Victoria Park and Welford Road Cemetery is hosted by an experienced wildlife expert who will lead you around these green spaces, pausing to talk about the different types of insects, plants and animals found here. This steady-paced walk is a great way to relax while discovering a little about nature in the city. Welford Road Cemetery has some uneven paths and steep slopes, please wear appropriate footwear. As we are looking at wildlife, we regret that dogs are not permitted on our nature-themed walks. These walks are provided by Leicester City Council’s Conservation Team, in collaboration with the Discovery Walks project. Free to attend but booking is required.

Special Interest Walk: University of Leicester – Joe Orton’s Leicester
Friday 14 November at 10.30am
Meet at the Orton pavement plaque on Orton Square in the city centre, near Curve theatre.
Walk finishes at the University of Leicester Campus, off University Road.

A 90-minute linear (one-way) walk with information stops. Allow an extra 30 minutes to visit the library archives afterwards. Steady pace. 1.8 miles.
Explore sites in the city associated with Joe Orton, the Leicester-born writer whose irreverent black comedies have scandalised theatregoers since the 1960s and discover how growing up here shaped his work. This walk is a collaboration with the University of Leicester. The tour is led by Dr Emma Parker, a leading Orton scholar, and ends with a chance to delve into Orton’s archive at the University of Leicester. Free to attend but booking is required.

Special Interest Walk: Exploring South Highfields (New!)

Wednesday 19 November at 11am

Starting at the gates of Prebend Gardens, Prebend Street, off London Road – a short walk from Leicester Railway Station. 

Up to 90 minutes. Steady pace. 1.4 miles.

New for autumn 2025, join us to explore the streets of the South Highfields Conservation Area, focusing on stories of some of the noteworthy people associated with it. We include a world-famous singer, explorers of the Antarctic and Amazon Rain Forest, people involved in the infamous ‘Green Bicycle’ legal trial of the early 20th century, and more. This walk is presented by one of our Walk Volunteers. Free to attend but booking is required.

Special Interest Walk: War & Peace in Modern Times
Saturday 22 November at 11am

Up to 90 minutes, steady pace. 1.5 miles.

Starting from Town Hall Square, off Horsefair Street (close to the Bike Park).

A repeat of the walk first offered in 2024. This is a different walk to our ‘focus on WWI’ themed walk, earlier in November. Join us to visit buildings and memorials in the city, pausing for a little information along the way. We lightly touch on places of interest associated with the Boer War, WWI and WWII, and the threat of the cold war. We include factories involved in the war effort, memorials to the fallen and stories of some of the soldiers. This walk is presented by one of our Walk Volunteers with an interest in the subject. Free to attend but booking is required.
