Getting to school!
We’ve created this toolbox to support parents and children to have more options regarding how they can travel to school. There are different sections below to provide information regarding the different methods that can be used to travel to and from school.
Walking is the most popular mode of travel to get to and from school but we think it could be used even more. Take a look at this link from Living Streets for all the info on walking to and from school, there’s also this link to walking routes of varying length across the county
Your school could also set up a Park and Stride site, this is where those who need to travel by car are encouraged to park away from the school in quieter areas or car parks and then pupils can walk the remainder of the journey.
There are also exciting opportunities to promote walking at your school coming up with Walk to School week rescheduled for w/c 5th October and Leicestershire schools’ active travel month taking place then too
Just like scooting cycling can be a fun and independent way to get to school. Cycling to school can be the first step to learning a life skills and creating a positive healthy habit. This video will show you where to get started in helping your child to learn to ride.
Many families have been enjoying walking, running, scooting and cycling as part of their daily exercise. It’s a great opportunity to keep this going when schools go back, and so check out Sustrans’ guide to travelling to school safely and actively
Cycling doesn’t have to just be for travel and there are loads of fun ways you can cycle across the county, take a look at this link to find some of the brilliant routes across the county
There’s also British Cycling’s Lets Ride Local information for families looking to get out on their bikes
Scooting can be a fun and healthy way to travel to and from school, but it doesn’t just have to be for the kids!
Just like a park and stride site in #1 your school can set up a park and scoot site so pupils can get more time enjoying their scooters!
